WaiTIME by WAI Malaysia : Merdeka Special
Am-AI-zing Women in AI @ Malaysia

Women in Artificial Intelligence or WAI is a nonprofit do-tank working towards gender-inclusive AI that benefits global society. Our mission is to increase female representation and participation in AI. We are a community-driven initiative bringing empowerment, knowledge, and active collaboration via education, research, events, and blogging. We believe in the power of community based on mutual support, caring, and sharing to bring awareness, inspire and educate the next generations.

With the spirit of Merdeka, WAI Malaysia proudly brings you a 1.5 hrs WaiTIME session with the theme “Am-AI-zing Women in AI @ Malaysia”. As our National Day’s theme this year is Malaysia Prihatin, and, with a great concern to bring more females to the AI field, we are going to offer a FREE mentoring session for 40 minutes. The aim of this event is to gather awesome ladies in the field as well as those who want to kickstart their AI journey. Our event will start with a keynote from Prof Sameem to briefly introduce the application of AI in the medical field. Then, we will introduce awesome WAI Malaysia Leads that are also professionals in the AI field and how they venture into AI.

The keynote will be live on our FB page, but the sessions will be in Zoom and only open to those who registered for the tickets. We will send out the Zoom link a day before the event.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science, and, in its simplest form is an attempt to create intelligent machines. AI algorithms are used for learning, perception, problem-solving, language-understanding and logical reasoning. Through machine learning, and it's a more sophisticated cousin, deep learning (DL), AI provides systems that have the ability to learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. An expert system uses AI technology to simulate the behavior, judgment and decision-making ability of a human that has expert knowledge/experience in a particular field. Computer vision, another subfield of AI is related to the recognition of contents in photos and videos, while NLP is the ability of computers to process, analyze, and generate natural language data. Intelligent robotics, the multidisciplinary field of AI, engineering, and technology produces machines, i.e. intelligent robots, that can be used to replicate human actions. AI has been used in medicine since the 1970s as expert systems, and subsequently for diagnosis, prognosis, medical imaging, medical implants as well as surgical robots, among others. Although a relative newcomer to AI, the field of dentistry can benefit from a similar adoption of technologies.

Khadijah Jasni is a big data enthusiast and is currently finishing up her MSc in Data Science at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. After completing her undergraduate degree in Statistics at Universiti Teknologi MARA, she spent the subsequent years working in supply chain management. These experiences sparked her interest in the world of data science and artificial intelligence. Today, she has a keen interest in computer vision and sentiment analysis. She is also a proud core member of Women in Artificial Intelligence (WAI) Malaysia.

Geetha is a data science practitioner in Malaysia with 15 years’ experience in helping companies use data to innovate and accelerate growth in telecommunications, financial and education industries in Malaysia and abroad. Sharifah Sakinah is currently an Associate Professor in the Department, Intelligent Computing & Analytics (ICA), Faculty of Information & Communication Technology, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). She received her Bachelors's and Masters's degrees in Applied Mathematics in the School of Mathematics from University Science Malaysia. Following this, she received her Ph.D. from the University Of Alberta, Canada in 2012 in the Intelligent System. Her research in graduate school focused on granular computing and fuzzy modeling. Her current research work is on the granular fuzzy rule-based system, Evolutionary Method, Modeling, and Data Science.

She will talk on Artificial Intelligence – What it’s all about. What is it exactly that makes artificial intelligence such an essential and special technology right now?

“I personally believe that learning how AI works and understanding its implications for our lives is at least as important as learning to read and write. In other words, I recognize that we are now beginning to live in an era of AI, so it’s important to learn as much as we can about it early on.” - Lasse Rouhiainen.

Join her session to learn more about these!

Dr Fairoza is currently working in Vettons as a Machine Learning (ML) Engineer.
